Why take this trip with Flora Tours ?
The humpback whales spend all summer in Canadian water along the costs of Gulf of St. Lawrence, Newfoundland and Labrador. From June to September, they feed there and then from October they leave for a long migration along the American east cost to join the tropical water where they will spend all winter.
The humpback whales come to Dominican Republic to breed and give birth in Silver bank, Navidad bank and the Samaná. bay.
Samaná is really one of the best places in the world to observe the humpback whales because between January and March, that’s hundreds of whales coming into this bay who can be observed close to the cost.
At this time of the year there is a big activity as the males must compete to mate with a female, so we can see many whales breaching !
We can also find a mum and calf, which offer normally nice observation because the baby can’t stay down the water more than about 4 to 6 minutes, and likes to breach too.
The regulation on the distance to be respected is between 60 and 80 meters so we can really enjoy very nice observation and take good pictures which is important for whale research and monitoring in Samaná.
We have a hydrophone on board to try to listen to whale songs, but you must know that the result is not positive every day !
Whale watching in Samaná is only authorized from the 15 de January to the 30 of March.
